Hello!

What’s the difference between sinful disobedience and stubborn determination? This was one of the interesting tangents during our discussion at Wednesday Bible study. We were reading Luke 9 where the disciples are arguing about who is the greatest. One person commented how this sounded like children arguing over something petty like who gets to be line-leader. True enough. Yet, in the next verse Jesus tells his disciples to welcome the little child; and as Matthew 18 tells the story, Jesus also encourages his disciples to humble themselves “become like little children.” Children have many wonderful qualities like humility and innocence, but any parent knows they can also be disobedient and stubborn. We talked about the benefits of human determination, but when do we cross that line and step into the territory of disobedience? Like those times and situations when we are determined to have our way, not God’s way.

All of this is to say we had a very good discussion and we are getting to know each other better each week as we explore scripture and everyday life. The Wednesday Bible study in Luke will continue throughout August. Anyone is invited to come at 6:30pm in the Choir Room. We are considering other Bible study opportunities to offer starting in September. The Tuesday Starbucks bible study at Old Cutler will be finding a new location—possibly the Starbucks at 168th—due to the closing of our nearby store. Please consider any of the following possibilities:

· A Daytime study

· Introduction to the Old/New Testaments (9 weeks) or DISCIPLE (32 weeks)

· Topical studies such as Spiritual Gifts, Being a United Methodist

· Women’s or Men’s bible study

Send me an email with your thoughts or interest, and look for a response survey in church soon. This Sunday we will talk about the Lost Sheep and Lost Coin from Luke 15. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Peace,

Pastor Amber

· Saturday is the last Annex work day! FIU/MDC Wesley Interns move in THIS weekend! We need help painting & cleaning bathrooms, lining shelves and placing dishes, moving in furniture. If you can’t help with the physical labor, consider bringing some yummy goodies for our 2 new friends—Betty & Julie—sometime this week. Cookies, snacks, fruit would make a special welcome.

· The Interns would like to meet CRUMC… on August 22nd they will be in worship with us and then hosting an Open House at the Annex so we can all see the wonderful transformation! Mark your calendars to stay after worship!

· School Supply Drive is Happening! While you’re shopping pick up any deals on school supplies including backpacks. We will be distributing these to families in need in our community.

· Congratulations and Thanks to our Flea Market volunteers! It was another successful event earning around $1400. We also thank our Health Ministry volunteers for offering blood pressure screening to the community.

· Prayers are requested for the family of Jennifer Sickle, daughter of Sue Shepper and granddaughter of Bob Proudfoot, who died unexpectedly Sunday at the age of 28.
